Dubai Races unveils new Meydan racecourse
3/8/2010 5:30:00 PM
(8 March 2010): The recent unveiling of the world’s largest racecourse – Meydan – has reinforced Dubai’s credentials as a top sporting destination and an unparalleled centre of elite horseracing. Housed within the wider Meydan City, the racecourse has already become a focal point for the international racing season, particularly the Dubai World Cup – the world’s richest horse race – which takes place on 27 March 2010.
Featuring the longest race tracks in the world – an all-weather track at 1750m and a turf track of 2400m – Meydan offers a challenging but rewarding course for riders. It is little wonder, therefore, that the Dubai World Cup received a record number of almost 2000 entries from jockeys around the world keen to take part in the first Cup to be raced in this new, iconic venue and win the chance to obtain the world’s largest prize purse of £6.5 million ($10 million).
When translated, Meydan literally means “a place where people congregate and compete” and the developers have ensured that the visitor experience within the complex is second-to-none. Views of the racecourse are unparalleled from the vast grandstand which stretches 1.5km and can seat up to 60,000 spectators. Elsewhere on-site there is a five-star hotel, over 10 fine dining restaurants, the Meydan Museum and Gallery and an IMAX theatre.
Meydan City will feature the Meydan Free Zone and four distinct sub-districts – the Meydan Racecourse; where the Meydan Grandstand will take centre stage and be home to the 2010 Dubai World Cup, Meydan Metropolis; a series of state-of-the-art business parks, Meydan Horizons; where business towers intermingle with luxury waterfront developments and Meydan Godolphin Parks; with its distinctive Godolphin Tower created in the image of a thoroughbred and also where the shopping destination Signature Mall is located.
Ian Scott, director UK and Ireland for the Government of Dubai, Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), said: “Visitors are drawn to Dubai for its guaranteed, year-round sunshine which is ideal for participating in or spectating a huge selection of sports. Dubai offers a packed calendar of sporting events and activities from athletics to zorbing, with plenty of cricket, tennis, rugby and golf in-between. The unveiling of the iconic Meydan racecourse has evolved the emirate’s equestrian offering and reinforced the international profile and status of the Dubai World Cup.”
Why not go to Dubai this March and experience the spectacular Dubai World Cup at the Meydan Racecourse first-hand?
